Message from the
President
For those of you whom I've
not yet met, I'm Jane Messingham, BankIowa Office
Manager and Board President of Main Street
Waterloo. As I sit at my desk, preparing to
write this column, I sense a renewed energy.
Can you feel
it? I feel
it when I look out of my window and see the
freshly painted light poles adorned with beautiful
pink wave petunias. I feel it as I watch
kids playing in Lincoln Park. I feel it as I
see people laughing and smiling as they enjoy
lunch or drinks in front of one of our
extraordinary restaurants or bars. I feel it
when I see people anxious to
experience the renewed atmosphere in downtown
Waterloo. I feel it when I hear the memories
that this environment stirs up. I feel
it when I see people flocking to Friday'Loo and
the Farmers Market. I will feel it when I
see Lincoln Park and the Expo grounds come to life
with My Waterloo Days I
feel the anticipation of Main Street Waterloo's
events during RAGBRAI. I feel the excitement
for Main Street Waterloo's BBQ'Loo and for
IrishFest. Residents of Waterloo and the
surrounding communities and visitors from across
the state and across the country are eager to
visit downtown Waterloo. There is a
stronger, healthier pulse in the Main Street
Waterloo district and I feel the life that has
resulted.
I applaud those that have
taken the risks to preserve and renovate our
buildings downtown. These efforts have come
from the heart and have required a significant
investment. Thank you for your passion that
is enabling the pulse to become stronger.
Thank you to those that have invested
significantly and operated businesses in
our Main
Street district. Your investments and
dedication are
valued. I thank those that have dedicated
countless volunteer hours to Main Street
Waterloo's mission of revitalizing our downtown
center. Thank you for helping with events,
hanging plants and wreaths, cleaning the alleys
and sidewalks of downtown Waterloo, serving on a
council, and the many other activities that you
selflessly give of your time and
talents. We should all be proud of
how we have contributed to Main Street Waterloo's
rehabilitation. There have been remarkable,
positive changes in the last several years.
There are a number of plans being made for the
future and we have a long way to go. But for
now, feel the energy and excitement and be a part
of it. Smile when you feel the stronger
pulse in downtown Waterloo and know that you
contributed. |
Downtown
Bike Art
You Could Win a $50 gift certificate
from
Scheel's
Downtown
is alive and kicking - or pedaling in this
case. Summer is here and we are showing
off! Several Downtown businesses have put
their creative foot forward and decorated a bike
to be part of our Downtown Bike Art Walk and
Competition.
Here's
How You Win: Visit
participating businesses between now and July 31,
2010 and vote for the "Best Decorated" bike.
A map of participating businesses can be found at
the Main Street Waterloo
website. Submit your vote - along with your
name and phone number -
tomainstreetwaterloo@yahoo.com.
Become our
Facebook friend to increase
your chances to win. Each week (beginning
Thursday, May 13, 2010), a new photo will be sent
to each of our Facebook friends that shows our
"roving" bike in a new location. A correct
guess of the location also enters you into the
drawing. At the end of the week, the answer
will be revealed.
Now it's your
chance to get creative. If you "recreate the
pose" (with or without your bike) and send it to
mainstreetwaterloo@yahoo.com, you'll be entered a
second time.
Winners will be drawn
at the Saturday, July 31, 2010 Farmers Market at
the RiverLoop Expo. The business with the
winning bike will also win a prize, so be sure to
vote!

They're BACK!
The baskets are back and in full
bloom. Thanks to the Black Hawk County
Gaming Association we have newly painted light
poles to complement the petunias. A big
thank you to Nagle Signs for their hard work and
the use of their truck and JSA for the food to
keep us going. None of this would have
happened without our dedicated volunteers.
We are deeply grateful for our volunteers and all
they do for us throughout the
year.
